Daniel John Richards, Sr., age 63 years, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2014, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born on May 14, 1951 in Flint, Michigan, the son of the late Lawrence and Edwina (Behringer) Richards. Dan was a US Army veteran, served during Vietnam. On February 13, 1999 he married Roseann Atkinson, and she survives him. Dan enjoyed snowmobiling and hunting, and was known as the family story teller. He retired from General Motors in 2000 after 31 years of service.

Surviving family include his wife, Rose; his children, Cindy (Jeremy) Howe, Sherri (M.J. Phelps) Richards, Michelle (Todd) Griffis and Daniel (Marie) Richards, Jr.,; step-children, Thomas Reyna, Jennifer (Billy) Clark and Michael (Amanda) Reyna; grandchildren, Wyatt and Mason Howe, Richard "Muggs", Bailey, Brooke, Aleix and Owen, Dylan and Paige Griffis, Adriana and Kara Richards; step-grandchildren, Rebecca, Thomas, Jr.; Robert, Christopher and Dathan Reyna and Cody and Ashley; also surviving are his brothers and sisters, Ernest (Harriet) Richards, Florence Smith, Dorothy "Zee" (Norm) Foster, Ella (Delbert) Ronk, Donna Perry and Effie Randall; and many nieces and nephews and a close friend, Jack (Sandy) Simmons. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Edwina; and a brother, George Richards.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at the Penzien-Steele Funeral Home, 149 N. Main St. in Vassar. Sr. Ellen Rinke, IHM officiating, with burial will follow at Fremont Township Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Monday from 2:00 till 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and on Tuesday from 12 noon till the time of the service. Those desiring may make contributions to the family.
