Irene Mina Saelens was born in Bay City, MI on October 21, 1931 to the late Reinhold and Nina (Potter) Gohr. She passed away at Shannon's House in Bay City, MI on February 22, 2017. Irene was preceded in death by her husband, August R. Saelens on September 21, 1997.
She graduated from Bay City Junior College and began her county normal teaching career at Albee School in Saginaw County. She later received a Bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University, a Master's degree from Michigan State University and retired from the Bay City Public Schools. After retirement she and her husband spent summers at the cabin in Harrison, MI and winters in Arcadia, Florida. It was in Florida that she became an avid golfer. She also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, painting and playing cards. Throughout her life she enjoyed many social activities which continued in her retirement. She truly enjoyed life.
She is survived by 4 children: Cathy A. (Michael) Murphy, Mark A. Saelens, Sheri L. Young and Mitchell A. (Virginia) Saelens, 4 grandchildren: Jennifer (Scott) Braginton, Ernest (Melissa) Krygier, Matthew Saelens and Nathan Young, 10 great grandchildren and a sister Helen Haslam. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter Melissa Saelens and a brother Melvin Gohr.
Funeral and committal service will be Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home. The Rev. Erwin M. Hutter will officiate. Private burial will be at Floral Gardens Cemetery. Memorial tributes may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Shannon's House Adult Foster Care. Visiting hours will be Saturday from 11 a.m. until service time.
