John G. Freel, age 79 years, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 5, 2016 at his home. He was born in Bay City on March 26, 1937 to the late John A. and Agnes (Krzewina) Freel. John earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in education from Saginaw Valley State University and went on to earn an Educational Specialist Degree from Central Michigan University. He taught for 27 years in the Akron Fairgrove Public Schools. He was a member of St. Jude Thaddeus Parish and served 3 terms on the Essexville City Commission and 1 term as Mayor of Essexville. On August 19, 1967, he married the former Louise C. Michaels and she survives him. He also leaves 3 daughters: Susan M. (John) Williamson, Laura L. (Jeffrey) Strohpaul and Ann M. (Robert) Goodwin, his grandchildren: John, Claire, and Benjamin Williamson, Taylor and Zachary Strohpaul and Ashton and Hunter Goodwin, as well as his siblings: Leon (Judy) Freel, George (Shirley) Freel, Peter (Mary Ann) Freel, Donald (Kathy) Freel, Charles (Carol) Freel, Mary (Leslie) Green, Paul (Terry) Freel and Patricia (Larry) Hill and a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Freel. Also surviving is David Freel and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 4 brothers: his twin, Jerome, Bernard, Michael and Thomas Freel. Funeral Liturgy will be on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at 10 a.m. at St. Jude Thaddeus Parish-St. John the Evangelist Church in Essexville. The Rev. Fr. Dale Orlik will preside with Rite of Committal following in St. Patrick Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 from 3-9 p.m. at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home, with a Vigil for the Deceased at 7 p.m. He will lie in state at the church on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until service time. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Thaddeus Parish or the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
