Patriotic Emblem

Luther James Stewart, age 79 years, passed away Wednesday evening, December 6, 2017 at University Living of Ann Arbor. He was born December 1, 1938 in Saginaw, the son of the late Melvin and Ursula (Schnell) Stewart. Luther was a 1956 graduate of Vassar High School. Upon graduation, he attended Alma College for one year then begin his career at the US Post Office where worked for 37 years, the last 32 as a Rural Carrier. Luther was married on March 12, 1960 to Marie Colman and they remained together for 55 years until her death in 2015. In 1962 Luther spent a year in the US Army serving at Ft. Benning, Georgia. In November 1965 Luther and Marie moved into their home on Waterman Rd. where they lived until recently. Their home was a warm and welcoming location where friends and neighbors frequently gathered to swim, watch sports, or just hang out.
Luther had a wide variety of interests that kept him very active both at home and in the community. He was a lifelong supporter of the University of Michigan Athletics and he attended hundreds of events as well as being a charter member of the Victors Club and a member of the President's Club. Luther was an avid golfer and those on his mail route can no doubt thank this passion for the early delivery of their mail. Outside of sports, Luther showed a strong commitment to the area he lived in and was actively involved in a variety of organizations. He was a member of American Legion Post 400. He served on the Vassar Township Board of Review, Planning Commission, and Brownfield Board. He was Secretary and Treasurer of the Vassar Lions Club. He served on the Tuscola County Community Foundation. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Mayville.
Luther is survived by his son, Jack Stewart, his wife Melissa (Pepera) Stewart, and his grandchildren, Kenneth Stewart and Mackenzie Stewart.
The family will greet friends from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at the Penzien-Steele Funeral Home, 149 N. Main St. in Vassar. Private burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Mayville.
