Margaret Magdalena Russell passed away peacefully at Autumn Years in Clarkston, Michigan, on Friday, November 18, 2016, at the age of 94 years. Born May 28, 1922, in Farrell, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Michael and Helen (Kibash) Darazy. Margaret married Robert "Bob" Russell on October 25, 1947, in Reese. They were married for 60 years and resided in Vassar their entire married life. She is survived by their son, Robert (Patricia) Russell of Vassar, daughters, Barbara (Bill) Mihalic of Rochester and Brenda (Patrick) Geyer of Rochester Hills, 4 grandchildren, Mary (Ryen) Sack of Brighton, Joseph Mihalic of Austin, Texas, Matthew (Angela) Geyer of Madison, Mississippi, and Sarah (Max) Niedzwiecki of Rochester Hills; 2 great-grandchildren, Maksim Sack and Teagan Niedzwiecki; sister Katie Petty of Davison, brother-in-law Raymond (Kaye) Russell of Vassar; sister-in-law Betty Bauers of Ontario, Oregon, and several nephews, nieces, and great-nephews and great-nieces. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bob; her parents, Michael and Helen Darazy; her sister, Anna Loll; her brother, Andy Darazy; sisters-in-law, Fran Nixon, Jane Taylor, Nell Baranski, and Bernice Darazy; brothers-in-law, Pete Petty, Bob Loll, Eldon Taylor, Harry Nixon, and Wayne Bauers and her in-laws, Robert and Myrtle Russell.
Margaret was a parishioner of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church in Vassar where she served as a Eucharistic minister and was a member of the Ladies Altar Society. Strong in her faith, she prayed the rosary daily. She worked at Vassar Townsend North Elementary School for 20 years and was known as Grandma Russell to all the children whom she loved dearly. Margaret loved spending time with her grandchildren, cooking and baking for them and the rest of the family. She also loved crocheting, making many blankets that she gave away, playing cards with family and friends and going to the casino. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 22, 2016, at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church in Vassar, Rite of Committal will follow at Riverside Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Monday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Penzien-Steele Funeral Home, 149 N. Main St. in Vassar. A Vigil for the Deceased will be at 6:30 p.m. Margaret will lie in state at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Liturgy. In lieu of flowers donations to St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church Building Fund or to the Fr. Robert G. Smith Knights of Columbus #7591, would be appreciated.
