Dick passed away Sunday morning, December 4, 2016, with his family by his side, after surgery that could not do what we hoped it would. He was 67 years old. Born on October 4, 1949 to William D. and Grace Arlene "Honey" (Bateson) Shaw, who predeceased him. He grew up in Kawkawlin, graduated from Bay City Handy High School and Western Michigan University, and had three children, Sarah Beth (Michael) Scott, Amy Lynne (Ben) Denay, and Bradley Richard (Lisa) Shaw; seven grandchildren: Blair Scott, Andrew, Brennan and Lauren Denay, Aaden, Alex and Owen Shaw; a sister Marilyn (Fred) Atkari, and a brother Robert (Connie) Shaw. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and the many cousins he enjoyed spending time with; and his lively German Shepard, Dozer. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his stepmother, Elizabeth (Berry) Shaw. Dick's career in building and underground construction started by operating and working at several lumber companies in the Bay City area. In 1978, he started his family business, R.W. Shaw Contracting. He enjoyed making and improving things and used machinery, technology and his imagination to take on projects through Shaw Contracting. Shaw Contracting has grown over the last 38 years, with his business partner, Roger Wesenick and his son, Bradley. He was known to many as a "master storyteller", jokester and unofficial historian. Dick's first love was spending time with his three children, and his seven grandchildren. His favorite hobbies were visiting his job sites, driving his red Mercedes, railroading, and sailing. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and former member of the Bay City Lions Club, Saginaw Bay Yacht Racing Association, Bay City Homebuilders Association, Tri-County Contractors Association, Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association, and Kawkawlin Metropolitan Water District. Dick was one who liked to do things his way (after considering advice and alternatives of course) and experienced a broad range of outcomes – always learning how to make the most of the next opportunity and looking forward. He was courageous and strong as he endured and overcame many health obstacles and was thankful for the 26 years he received from his kidney/pancreas transplant. Some things Dick looked back on with a smile are: the quality work and reputation of Shaw Contracting and their employees; the success of his early projects Sunset Shores Marina, Wheeler Landing with business partners and past partnerships with Pier 7 and Pier 11 marinas; watching his grandkids grow up; and the pride and accomplishments of his three children. The family would like to thank his caregiver/friend, Brandy Hotham; the care of Dr. Andrew LeFluer, Dr. Khetarpal, and Dr. Cherukuri; and the exceptional nursing staff at Covenant Health Care (floor 3 CCU). The family will welcome family, friends and guests to celebrate Dick's life on Thursday, December 8, 2016. Visiting hours will be from 2:00 – 8:00 pm at Penzien – Steele Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Friday, December 9, 2016 at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Dr. Jeffery D. Weenick will officiate. Memorial contributions can be made to The Bay Area Community Foundation to help the family determine the best way to celebrate and honor Dick's memory, his value of education and skills, and generous spirit.
