Viola Schmidt, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at the age of 102 and is now at peace with her Lord. Always of most importance to her was her family. She will be very much missed. Viola was born on April 29, 1914 to the late Louisa (Borkhardt) and William Hollandmoritz. On May 14, 1949 she married Edward Schmidt, who predeceased her on March 31, 1977. In addition to her parents and husband, also preceding her in death were her five brothers: Raymond, Aaron, Theodore, Melvin, and Otto Hollandmoritz and four sisters: Cecilia Hollandmoritz, Mathilda Blaney, Clara Schulz, and Irma Coberley. Surviving her are her two daughters: Sandra (Donald) Walker and Janice (Charles) Emki, her three grandchildren: Angela Walker (James Tuttle), Thomas Walker (fiancee Pearl Kong) and Jeremy Walker and her great granddaughter, Jocie Tuttle. Also surviving her are her sister Leona Hoogenstyn, brother-in-law Robert (Darlene) Schulz, and many nieces and nephews.
Viola's family would like to thank Sheri Young and all the staff (Anna, Heidi, Cassy, Dee, Nate, and Jennifer) at Evergreen Pines and also the staff (Joseph, Randy, Melissa, Andrea, and Don) at Southern Care for the care and comfort given and kindness shown to Viola. Thanks also to Beth, Kay and Sandy for the help they gave to Viola while she was still living in her home and thanks to Pam for the comfort given to Viola when trips to the hospital were necessary, filling in until family could get there. Finally, many thanks to Pastor Westphal for his visits and support.
The funeral service will take place on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Leroy Westphal will officiate. Private interment will be in Floral Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 20, 2016 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Penzien-Steele Funeral Home and one hour before the funeral service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Immanuel Lutheran Church.
