Wilbert Frederick Romp was born in Detroit, MI on July 13, 1931 to the late Frederick and Lydia Romp. He passed away at McLaren Bay Region on October 10, 2017.
He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, a former city commissioner in Essexville and a former volunteer with the Essexville Department of Public Safety. He was the voice of the Garber Dukes football for over 20 years. Prior to retirement, Wilbert was a Lutheran teacher for 42 years, 35 of which was at Immanuel Lutheran School in Bay City.
Wilbert married Ruth J. Luedemann, on June 16, 1954 and she preceded him in death on April 16, 2013. He is survived by 2 sons: William (Robyn) Romp and Carl Romp, 5 grandchildren: Jennifer (Brian) Jammer, Curtis Romp, Jordon Romp, Chad (Laura) Romp and Karlee Romp and 2 great grandchildren: Mack Jammer and Payton Romp.
Funeral service will be Friday, October 13, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Leroy Westphal will officiate. Private burial will be at Floral Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Immanuel Lutheran School. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home. He will lie in state at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time.
