William John "Bill" Wendt, age 84, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at his residence following a brief illness. Bill was born on November 21, 1932 in Grayling, MI , the son of the late George and Ardis (Wilbur) Wendt. Bill left high school prior to graduation to enlist in the U.S. Army and bravely served two tours of duty in Korea during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, Bill worked on the family farm and eventually took a job as a merchant seaman, Bill sailed on all five great lakes during his time as a merchant seaman and often told wonderful stories of his adventures.
Bill is survived by the staff at the Fisher Road Home and his longtime friend, Diane Swank. These individuals truly saw Bill for the wonderful person he was and they are indeed his family. A special thank you is extended to all the fisher Road Home staff and Michigan Community Services staff who provided Bill with wonderful support the final five years of his life. Thanks to them Bill was able to accomplish what he wanted and had no regrets.
The Funeral Liturgy and Rite of Committal will be Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Penzien-Steele Funeral Home where visiting will begin at 9 a.m. The Rev. Fr. Dale Orlik will preside. The Bay County Veterans Council will provided military rites following the Liturgy. Private burial will be at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, MI.
